Advocacy

The root of Kelsey’s clinical, research, and consulting work comes from her longtime commitment to advocacy and racial and queer justice. With personal experience of the impacts of advocacy, Kelsey has long understood the need for a practice that is geared towards achieving equity and safety for all members of society. In addition to Kelsey’s past advocacy experience, Kelsey served as the Co-Chair of the SOGIE Collective (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression) within the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers from April 2017 to June 2020, and remains on the Steering Committee.

Trans justice and gender liberation are paramount in Kelsey’s practice. As a pledge signer of the Gender Affirming Letter Access Project (GALAP), Kelsey provides free consultations and letters for gender-affirming access to medical care in adherence to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care, Version 8 (WPATH SOC8) of which she is a Graduate Student Member. GALAP clinicians (transgender, nonbinary, and allied mental health clinicians) resist the harmful practices of gatekeeping and believe in an informed consent model where clients can affirm their gender identity without the steep cost of sessions with mental health professionals and reductionist clinical practices.

Through her GALAP commitment, all letter-writing consultations are completely free of charge. Kelsey has been writing surgery letters on behalf of trans and nonbinary folks since October 2017, and though insurance companies have requested minor edits on occasion, all of the letters Kelsey has written have been accepted by surgeons and insurance companies.
